Rep. Debbie Riddle continues to be an idiot

Texas State Representative Debbie Riddle wants Texas to adopt the ‘”show me your papers” immigration law that just passed in Arizona:

Texas lawmakers are closely watching Arizona’s get-tough immigration law, with Democrats saying the legislation is wrongheaded while some Republicans say they’ll push for similar action here.

“The first priority for any elected official is to make sure that the safety and security of Texans is well-established,” said Rep. Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball. “If our federal government did their job, then Arizona wouldn’t have to take this action, and neither would Texas.”

Riddle said she introduced a similar measure last legislative session — it stalled in committee — and said she’ll do the same when the Legislature next meets in regular session in January.

This isn’t much of a surprise from someone whose most important legislative achievement was putting the words “one state under God” in the Texas Pledge of Allegiance and giving her “pit of hell” speech when questioned about her proposed health care budget cuts and their effect on border hospitals. Luckily, there’s still some sensible people in the legislature:

Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, called the Arizona move “extremely damaging and hateful,” and said any attempt to replicate it in Texas wouldn’t pass but would damage the GOP.

Any such measure that gains traction “just adds to the Democratic side,” said Van de Putte, adding she’s scotched Arizona travel plans.

“I will not step into that state, and every single group that I’m a part of, if they plan a meeting there, I will not go, and I will ask all of my colleagues to please not go,” she said. “If my family would be treated differently just because of the color of their skin, then I don’t want to be in that state.”

Jim Harrington of the Texas Civil Rights Project predicted “zero” chance of a similar effort here.

Such a push “would cause an enormous political transformation of the state a lot quicker than it’s happening at this point,” Harrington said. “It would galvanize the Hispanic community astronomically.”

Indeed, a conservative push for this could benefit Bill White in the gubernatorial race this year if Rick Perry is forced into supporting it by his crazy base, turning off even more Latino voters to the GOP. I have to think they are seriously worried about this.

I broke my ankle and had to go to Parkland hospital in Dallas. I had to sit in the waiting room for 17 hours with my foot hanging off my leg while hispanic after hispanic giving birth paraded past me.

American citizen’s should not come second to illegal immigrants and I support the change.

    • elizabeth says:

First of all, it’s hard to believe that you were in the ER for 17 hrs. You don’t know if the hispanic women that were about to give birth were illegals. I work in billing at a hospital and I see more hispanics paying their medical bills than any whites. In fact most white people have to apply for charity benefits because they claim they have no money. Most of them can’t pay their copay of $10 while hispanics pay their office visit in full. I hope you pay your ER bill when it comes in the mail or maybe you’ll just file for bankruptcy so that can take care of all your outstanding bills

      • Steve says:

Well lets see, the hispanics probably pay in cash, because their employers pay them in cash and withhold no taxes. They are also probably drawing money through social welfare programs. Whites probably have insurance companies that pay a lot of their bills and those that dont are to busy paying taxes so your beloved bill-paying hispanics can be flush with cash when they come have anchor babies at your hospital.
Dozens of hospitals across the southwest are closing or being forced into bankruptcy over the cost of federally mandated care programs for illegals.

      • Nat-Wu says:

So, you’re evidently not aware of the fact that illegals tend to use fake SSNs to gain employment which means they are paying taxes. Not only that, but in states like Texas where we don’t do State income taxes, most taxes are captured in the form of sales taxes. You want to tell me how illegals manage to avoid that? I mean, what, they go to the supermarket, show their “I’m an illegal” card and the store just doesn’t charge them? You know that would lose the store money, right? So there you go: they’re paying into the system but not eligible for most of its benefits.

Now, when you make a claim about “dozens of hospitals” there should be some documentation. Given that we like to deal in facts here, how about you provide said documentation as some kind of evidence?

“…while hispanic after hispanic giving birth paraded past me” – wow, that’s a pretty racist characterization. Of course, health care reform is what was really needed in that situation and thankfully, we got it. How did you know these people were illegally in the country? Maybe they were just poor… We all want immigration reform, but this law is racist and draconian.

The problem, of course, with this law is that it will target all Hispanics – even if they are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants. Who carries around their birth certificate with them? Pretty much no one, but whites and other non-Hispanics aren’t seriously going to have to be worried about being asked for their papers and you know it. But I doubt you care given that it seems to be Hispanics that you dislike, and not illegal immigrants.

    • Janice Rose says:

Hispanics are not a “race” –they ARE uneducated. They are CAUCASIANS just like “whites.” They want to put the “race” thing on Americans. We’re not buying. Our message to them is “we’re from the same human family as you Bubba.” The only difference in you and us is we don’t have children we cannot afford, we learn ENGLISH, we don’t expect the government to pay for the birth of our dozens of children, and we don’t go before school boards yelling that Mexicans are “prejudice” against our children. We make our children stay in school and learn. The numbers don’t lie. Read Sunday’s Houston Chronicle about the school dropout problem among Mexicans.
In Dallas when we “profile” Mexicans, we find they fit the profile more often than whites or even blacks: no valid driver’s license, or no auto insurance (govt. doesn’t GIVE them that YET), or no valid inspection sticker or not valid registration sticker or–usually–a combination of these.
WE are a nation of immigrants. When mine came to this country from Europe they were as dirt poor as any Mexican you’ll ever meet. They, along with millions of other Europeans, got EDUCATED, LEARNED ENGLISH AND BUILT AMERICA. Their descendants (ME for example) hold the skilled–and others– to flock to America. When we’re gone in 10 to 20 years, one could get hysterical thinking about Mexicans and Arabs running the country. Look at how well they developed Mexico and the Middle East. GOO…OOOOD LUCK.

      • Rosie says:

Janice Rose, you sound bitter. It’s sad that you would think that ALL Hispanics are uneducated. It would be the equivalent of saying, “All whites are racist.” You’re the kind of American that gives this great nation of ours a bad name.
Yes, there’s MANY problems in our country having to do with the economy, immigration, education, etc… But to refer to certain groups the way you do, it’s just sad. Do you really think all Hispanics in Dallas are Mexicans? You sound like someone during segregation times. I guess those days are not over thanks to folks like you. I hope that one day you’re able to look beyond yourself… and value people for who they really are. Just because a disturbed and possibly crazy, young man went on a shooting rampage at a university, doesn’t make ALL Asians crazy and cold blooded. I hope you understand my example… If not, you can always go back to school and expand on your education. By the way, since you’re into finding all these illegal aliens, do some research on Asian illegals and I’m sure you’ll be suprised as to the alarming number that live in the US.
The proposal is racist, it only targets one group of people… and not the rest of illegal immigrants.

      • Seven Republics says:

Janice Rose…first off, youre the one who is uneducated. Hispanic is an ethnicity not a race!!! I had the privilige of being born a Mexican citizen and migrated to the United States back in 1996. I migrated here not because your country has great morals or values, and certainly not because of the crappy mixed culture that you all have, i came here for money! thats right, thats as honest as i can be. the money here is good but it doesnt mean i have to like white trash such as yourself. i came here just like your ancestors to build from the ground up. i am currently enrolled in the University of Houston Law program and i will fight ignorant policies such as these when i pass the bar exam. My family is currently building a large Hacienda in the Houston outskirts where we will proper and retire. what do you have, and what have you built like your ancestors?

      • Lauren says:

It is sad to know that there are people like you in the world. You believe you are superior just for the fact that your ancestors came from Europe and because you learned to speak English! woooow you must be a genius:) I am a 16 year old and I live in the valley. I am fully caucasian and my best friend is hispanic. My boyfriend actually lives in Mexico and we see each other every other day. At my school, there are a variety of cultures mixed together. From Chinese to Arabs, we all try to get along. Althouhg I live in the United States, I am considered a minority in my school. Sometimes I wish I could be more mexican that american. They have an amazing culture with long-lasting traditions that started thousands of years ago. I sit every day in a classroom that has about 3 english-speakers & 20 BILINGUAL students. And yes, maybe their parents do not how to speak english properly, but most of them are hard working people who are looking to give their kids a better future. Besides, just because you were born in the US means that you will give it all you got to become a good citizen. Most of my American friends consume drugs and alcohol since we were in junior high because of the open-minded parents they have. I am not generalizing like you did, I am just bringing out the fact that the color of your skin or the roots from your past have nothing to do with your development in society. It is amazing that you are wishing us good luck in a country run by Arabs and Mexicans as if being part of that culture meant iminent failure. I sure hope that in the future your eyes get opened by someone and you realize that not only are you being racist, but also you are basing your argument in ideas that are dumb. Hopefully after you see that a teenage girl can accept diversity you will sit and think about it and realized you are making a big mistake.

PS. not every hispanic is an illegal immigrant and considering they have no right to scholarships or any other form of educational support, you should be impressed by their determination to become someone in life.

  3. no need to hisPANIC says:

Wow sad story…not about your ankle but about your ignorance. I didn’t realize there were “Illegal Immigrant Detectors” on the market yet? Get insurance that you pay for and you don’t have to go to “the local community hospital”. Note to “you” Mayoclinic.com or WEB MD check symptons and make a regular dr.’s appt. so the illegal pregnant ladies won’t get in your way……Güey!

  4. Xanthippas says:

Good post. I’d like to go ahead and thank Riddle in advance for making our job easier come November. Her idiocy alone may save us a few house seats.

  5. Joan says:

I did a group search for “Debbie Riddle is an idiot” and was pleasantly surprised to find this group already exists. What, does she think jumping on the moronic AZ bandwagon is going to get her 15 minutes of fame? So scary to think these freaks are actually getting elected. Right wing zenophobic nut jobs. She should just go freshen up her eye liner and bleach those roots again–cause that’s clearly what really matters!

    • Jim says:

Just another Church of Christ belief gone wrong…..!!!!!!

    • Parker says:

Poor Debbie, in order to avoid upper lip creases she has forfeited her ability to put her two lips together and make a normal P,B, or M sound. Your face just doesn’t move Debbie….a little too much Botox maybe?

  6. Matt says:

I guess one mans “idiocy” is another man’s “common sense”. I think officials that put the safety and security of Texans first are doing a good thing.

Give the bill a read when you get time. It’s only two pages. The whole “show me your papers” intro to your article is incorrect. Riddle’s bill does NOT require anyone to show ID or prove their citizenship.

    http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/81R/billtext/pdf/HB00049I.pdf

  7. Adam says:

The bill hasn’t yet been introduced… That’s a previous bill. She says she’ll introduce something similiar to Arizona’s in the next legislative session.

  8. JOE FROM NAVASOTA says:

Yes we do have some sensible people in the legislature and Debbie Riddle is one of them, but it is obvious from some of the comments that we now need to add another hyphenated class of Americans, to-wit: “STUPID-AMERICANS”.

    • Janice Rose says:

RIGHT ON JOE. UNLESS WE COME TO OUR SENSES AND STOP PEOPLE WHO WANT TO HOLD ON TO THEIR CUSHY JOBS WITH ALL THOSE EYE-POPPING “BENIES” AND “PERKS” FOR DECADES BY PANDERING TO THOSE BENT ON OUR DESTRUCTION, WE’LL SOON BE DESTROYED.

    • Parker says:

Speaking of stupid, it’s the Texans who elected this high school graduate with a little college and only an AA degree! Wow, I’m impressed by those credentials!

  9. Soooo…everyone who comes into an emergency room should have to provide proof of citizenship? Including the unconscious ones? And if they don’t happen to have their birth certificate on them when they get hit by a car, say, we do what? Let the die in the parking lot?

  10. Matt says:

Adam – She’s re-introducing the same bill. This is stated in the press releases on her website.

  11. libralism=mental disorder says:

I would like to ask the people here whining about “show me your papers” exactly what they do when pulled over by a cop and asked for “license and registration?
Should people have more rights than others because they’re Hispanic?
If you compare the AZ bill to FEDERAL LAW, they are the same, except the Feds haven’t enforced the law in decades to any satisfactory amount. The AZ law simply enforces federal law at a state level.
Obfuscation of the facts does not make a vaid argument.

    • patpoint says:

Well, that certainly is a stupid analogy. EVERYONE is required to show license and registration when asked by law enforcement. NOT everyone would be asked to show birth certificate and proof of citizenship.

  12. Adam says:

You can listen to an interesting debate between Reps. Debbie Riddle and Trey Martinez Fisher on the immigration issue here: http://www.krld.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=4664047

Rep. Riddle now claims that her bill is not similar to to Arizona bill, but couldn’t really articulate the differences.

  13. Concerned Citizen says:

Debbie Riddle is far from being an idiot. If you believe that then you must feel it ok to allow illegal aleins to remain in Texas. If you approve of allowing people to break the law freely then why enforce any laws? The law is the law. Period. I would bet if someone broke the law by doing something to you. You would be the first one on the phone calling the police. Hopefully, in November, we can vote out a lot of the problems in this country and restore a little common sense before it buries us all.

    • Nat-Wu says:

That “the law is the law” argument is always funny. It used to be the law that escaped slaves had to be returned to their masters. Oh, yes, and the law said that slavery was legal. It used to be the law that drinking alcohol was against the very Constitution! In short, don’t hold up ridiculous laws and say, “It’s the law!” In addition, most of us certainly don’t call the police every time we see somebody speeding or making an unsafe lane change. So yeah, it does matter what law it is. Not all laws are created equal.

Now if somebody does something that’s directly harmful to me, sure, I’ll call the cops. But I don’t see how any immigrant worker is detrimental to my lifestyle. Did they cause the recession by buying houses they couldn’t afford with credit the banks knew full well they couldn’t support? Or did they choose not to set aside money for pension funds that are now driving the states to bankruptcy? How exactly does it hurt me that farmers make bigger profits on strawberries because they don’t have to pay as much to immigrant workers (and that I get cheaper strawberries into the bargain)? Oh yes, it’s because my taxes go to subsidize illegals who use up all our benefits like the “free” medical care that’s out there.

Although the way our system works, if they didn’t, some homeless American would be using those same incredibly awesome benefits we give out to everybody who doesn’t work, right? Yes, I’d rather pay for a dumbass American and her baby because they were born here than some illegal Mexican, even though she’s paid far less in taxes than those illegal workers (because unless you forget, most of them use fake SSNs to pay payroll taxes and we all pay sales taxes, etc).

“The law is the law”. Please. Get back to us when you have an argument that has some substance to it, will you?

  14. AP says:

    @ Steve

Your the biggest idiot I have ever heard speak, next to Glen Beck and now Debbie “Riddle me this”. Are you kidding me? Anchor babies? Do you even know what that term means, in regards to its proper use within the exact nomenclature? I will just say this: There is a HUGE lack of academia and intellectual prowess among some right wing nutters like yourself. It is simply stated, the reason for ALL OF OUR COUNTRIES PROBLEMS. Yes thats right, every single one of the, not terrorism, not immigration, but stupid worthless uneducated right wing republicans like Glen Beck who can’t even read or write basic English.

Anchor Babies. First learn the laws regarding how reunification works when considering a family trying to stay because of their child being born in the U.S. It is still a long hard lengthy process. And you right wing religious nut jobs use that term for everything from , terrorist training children who were born illegally in the United States to families from Mexico “anchoring” themselves down by feeding off the fact that their child was born in the U.S ALL WRONG BY THE WAY. it means nothing!
