Blog: Does God Want Us to Be Happy? (01/25/22)
By Kurt Trucksess – CrossWinds Church
After Tom Brady won his third Super Bowl, he was interviewed by Steve Kroft. A clearly displeased Brady said, “Why do I have three Super Bowl rings and still think there’s something bigger for me? I think, ‘God, it’s got to be more than that…’” In other words, even if you were as rich and famous and successful as Tom Brady, that doesn’t mean you’d be happy.
When we turn to the Bible, we find that happiness will always elude us until we realize that true happiness can only come from God and what he has done for us through Jesus. It is the only happiness of our life that will remain. It is the only happiness that will remain. This means that Christians must be abnormally happy people. Let me explain why.
1. The God we serve is always happy. If we serve a happy God, to represent him correctly, we must be a happy people. Psalm 16:11 tells us that in the presence of God is fullness of joy. To his right are pleasures forever.
2. The gospel message of what Jesus has done for us is a happy message. It’s a message that should make people happy. This is why the gospel message of what Jesus has done for us is called the good news. This is news that should make us happy.
3. No one will turn to Jesus unless they believe there is happiness to be found in Jesus. People will only know if we serve a happy God if they meet Christians who are happy people.
4. The Bible commands us to be happy. Paul says in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say again, rejoice.” It could be translated as: “Always be happy in the Lord, and again I say, be happy.” In this verse, Paul twice commands us to be happy. He tells us to find our happiness in God and what God has done for us.
God will not command us to do what the Holy Spirit does not authorize us to do. If you are unhappy today, go to God and ask him to help you see better what God has done for you in Jesus. Ask God to help you see how good God has been to you through Jesus by offering to forgive your sin through Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus also makes us new people with new hearts. Jesus makes us the most loved and honored beings in the universe for all eternity when we repent of our sin and trust Jesus to save us from our sin. We don’t deserve any of this. If we keep our eyes on what God has done for us through His Son, how can we not be happy?
