The Newcastle United Blog | Premier League boss confirms Newcastle Target have started new contract talks
Widely seen as one of Newcastle’s main targets for January, James Maddison could be at a crossroads with Leicester City. The playmaker was the subject of two rejected offers from Newcastle over the summer. When the winter window arrives, he will enter the final 18 months of his current contract.
That’s the hope, at least, from the Magpies’ perspective. Athleticism published comments from Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers confirming that new contract negotiations have begun with the 25-year-old playmaker, whose ability to unblock defenses was rare in Newcastle’s draw at Bournemouth on Saturday.
After confirming Maddison’s agent had held talks with the Leicester brass on numerous occasions, Brendan added:
“I’m pretty sure the club would want to do that. With James two years from the end, the club would naturally want to protect the asset. But it works both ways.
“If a player – not to say James – doesn’t want to sign him, it can be a dead end. Both parties need to be able to come to an agreement.
“But absolutely, he is an exceptional player and of course Leicester City would benefit from keeping him for longer.
“He was brilliant. He is a high level player. He improves, develops and is happy. Of course, he’s a top-level player, so people are going to be interested in him, but I haven’t seen any change in him.
Leicester are yet to taste league victory in what has been a dismal start to the campaign; one to rival Newcastle’s last year. It even took them a penalty shootout to pass Stockton in the Carabao Cub.
The Foxes are coming off a 6-2 loss at Tottenham, although they played very well in the first half. They are last in the league with their manager’s future seriously in doubt. All of this will have an impact on whether Maddison signs a new contract or waits to see what January can bring.
